Trigger Point Injections

What are Trigger Points?

Trigger points are the muscle “knots” felt commonly in areas like the neck, shoulders, and back. These can lead to ongoing pain, sensitivity, and limited range of motion due to muscle fibers remaining in a contracted state. At our clinic, we address trigger points by injecting an anesthetic medication or botulinum toxin (such as Botox) to help relax the muscle and provide relief.

What are the Serious Side Effects of Trigger Point Injections?

While trigger point injections are typically safe, it’s important to be aware of rare but serious side effects such as infection, localized bleeding, or nerve damage. In exceptionally rare instances, injections near the chest wall could lead to a collapsed lung (pneumothorax).

For a detailed overview of potential risks, please review the Cleveland Clinic’s guide to trigger point therapy.
