Malaria Disease

What is Malaria?

Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite from mosquito bites. The infection often results in symptoms similar to flu such as high fever, chills, and body aches. Without treatment, the illness can be life-threatening, requiring hospitalization and even leading to death.

Where is Malaria Found?

Transmission occurs in over 90 countries and affects 210 million people annually, resulting in nearly 500,000 deaths. Malaria is prevalent in parts of Central America, South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. It’s crucial for travelers in Southern Arizona to be aware of their risk before embarking on international trips.

The disease is more common in rural areas, but infection can occur in cities, especially following rainfall, which provides standing water for mosquitoes to breed.

How Do I Protect Myself Against Malaria?

Currently, there is no vaccine for malaria. The most effective prevention involves avoiding mosquito bites and taking prescribed medications. Prevention medications are taken orally and dispensed through a pharmacy.

No malaria medication is 100% effective, so it’s important to apply insect repellents on exposed skin that contain DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE or PMD). These have been tested and proven to be highly effective against mosquito bites.

Another type of insect repellent for clothing is permethrin. Treated clothing can repel mosquitoes for several weeks. Additionally, wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed shoes is recommended to minimize bites.

What Medications are Available for Prevention?

Choosing the right malaria medication depends on your travel destination, age, and health history. At Wildflower Travel & Wellness Clinic, we will discuss medication options with you, including:

  • Atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone)
  • Doxycycline
  • Chloroquine phosphate
  • Mefloquine

Each medication has its own benefits and drawbacks, with some requiring daily intake and others weekly. A comprehensive discussion on malaria and medication options will be provided during your appointment. Remember, malaria pills do not protect against other mosquito-borne diseases like Yellow Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, or Dengue Fever.
